A approach to perform a quick change over, Single Minute Exchange of Dies, the time required to “set-up” a piece of operating equipment is less then 10 minutes.

In pull system, the production lot size must be small. Therefore, more change over activities have to be performed comparing to the pull system. More changeover activities are not effective if the setup time is long. For this reason, change over activities must be performed in optimum time. SMED is set-up techniques that used to minimize the necessary time and standardize the set-up process.

Changeover process consist of three stages,

  • Preparations stage, external steps,
  • Set-up stage , internal steps,
  • Adjustment stage, external steps
